Welcome
to Yanshan University. This booklet will facilitate your decision
of studying abroad. We sincerely hope that your experience of studying
abroad will begin here at Yanshan University.
Do You Know Yanshan University?
Yanshan University started
as the
Department of Heavy
Machinery of Harbin Institute
of Technology (or HIT), which
was founded in 1920. In
1958, the department and its
relevant specialities moved to
the strategic industrial town
of Fulaerji in Northeast China’s
Helongjiang Province, and
were renamed School of Heavy
Machinery of HIT. In 1960, the school became
independent as the Northeast China Institute
of Heavy Machinery, and in 1978 she was accredited as one of
the eighty-eight national key institutions
of higher learning. She
began
to relocate southward
in
the historic resort city of
Qinhuangdao
from 1985, and completed
the migration in 1997,
when
she was ratified by the former
National Committee of Education
to adopt the present title.
Yanshan University now occupies
5,800 mu (or 386 hectra) of land, with
a total construction area
of 890,000 m2. At present, the university
has a faculty of 2,507, of which
1,400 are full-time teachers, including
574 professors and associate professors
,81 doctoral advisersassociate professors.
As far as the student population
is concerned, the total number of full-time
students has reached 32,000.
Yanshan University now boasts of three post-doctor
work stations, six first-level doctor degree
granting disciplines, 28
second-level doctor degree granting
specialities, 70 master degree granting programmes,
nine master of
engineering programmes,
one MPA (master of
public administration) programme, one MBA
(master of business administration) programme,
and fifty-nine undergraduate programmes.
With these wide ranging programmes, Yanshan
University has taken the shape of a multiversity
with an emphasis on engineering studies,
and equal attention to literary, social,
economic studies,management, law, and education.

At the same time, the university
runs one national major discipline,
one national
key laboratory, one national engineering
research center, 11 provincial
major disciplines, and
10 provincial
key laboratories. In specific, the
university
is known for its excellence
in
the development of whole-set heavy
machinery
and equipment, parallel robots,
technology
of fluid transmission and electric
liquid
servo control, technology and equipment
of
precision plasticity figuration, thermal
treatment of big forging, technology
of mega amorphous bodies,
metastable materials and
technology, industrial automation,
and
so on. With a total of
eight
national technological awards garnered
in
her pocket since 2000, the university
has
always come out top on the list
of
award-winning tertiary institutions
of the
country.
In 1999, Yanshan University
created her science
park in the Qinhuangdao
Economic
and Technological Development
Zone. The park was officially
ratified by the Ministry
of
Science and Technology and the Ministry
of
Education as a National University
Science
Park in September 2003, and became one of the thirty-four
university science parks of the nation.
The university also attaches importance to
international academic exchange and
cooperation and has conducted joint programmes
with institutes and tertiary institutions
from the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Germany,
France, Italy, Ukraine, Ireland, Korea and
Japan, etc. There are now more than 20 foreign
teachers from (six countries)
working in the university
and 100 foreign students (of 10 different
nationalities) studying here. Besides, the
university ran a Master of Engineering Administration
(MEA) programme in Hong Kong in 2002, thus
becoming the first mainland tertiary
institution which makes Hog Kong a base for
such offshore training.
TYanshan University lies in Qinhuangdao City,
which is 260 kilometres away from Beijing.
As one of the Class A tourist cities in China,
Qinhuangdao is rich in tourist resources
and has made tourism one of its pillar industries.
The Great Wall stretches across the entire
city. The scenic spots in Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan,
Golden Beach, Nandaihe, Mt. Jieshishan, Tianma
Lake, Mt. Beiniuding, etc. have been developed
in recent years.
General introduction to the Division of International
Cooperation/the School of International Education
The Division of International Cooperation
in Yanshan University is the functional section
to develop the International cooperation
and other International programmes. Her function
includes: constitute the develop layout of
International cooperation; establish, develop
and maintain the contact and cooperation
between Yanshan University and overseas universities;
employ foreign teachers and serve them; receive
the visitation of foreigners; transact the
procedure of going abroad for teachers and
students of the university; receive and undertake
International meetings,etc.
The School of International Education is
one of the new school in Yanshan University.
Her main functions are: Running a school
with foreign universities; dispatch students
to study in foreign universities; recruit
foreign students to study in Yanshan University
and be in charge of their study and living.
The Division of International Cooperation
and the School of International Education
works as one department, The Dean and Vice
Dean of the School of International Education
respectively act as the Director and Deputy
Director of the Division of International
Cooperation.
In recent years, the work of International
Cooperation developed stably. The number
of foreign teachers employed by our university
is above twenty every year, they are from
USA, Japan, Russia, German, Canada, England,
etc. In 2005,we have 146 short and long term
foreign students from Korea, Japan, Russia,
USA, Italy, Mongolia, Slovenia, etc. In the
part of International Cooperation and exchange,
we not only build closer relations between
Yanshan University and our amity foreign
universities, but also established new cooperative
relation with other new foreign universities.
Teaching Programmes:
Short-term Chinese Language Programmes
Short-term courses are open once a year, in
July and August, varying from three to four
weeks each, with a total of 24 class hours
per week. Depending on the students’ level
of proficiency in Chinese and their needs,
the courses may include:(1) Comprehensive
Chinese , (2) Chinese Listening Practice
, (3) Oral Chinese , (4)Chinese Reading.
During the courses, extra curriculum activities
such as sightseeing tours and other excursions
are organized so as to help students know
more about Chinese customs and have direct
contact with the Chinese society.
In the past few years, short-term courses
have been successfully run for students from
Russia, Korea, Japan ,Slovenia and America
,etc. This experience has helped us to improve
both our programmes and our administration
in the hope of better catering for the needs
of overseas students.
Long-term Chinese Language programmes
Long-term Chinese Language programmes begin
in September and March respectively, and
the duration of each programme varies from
one semester, one year, to two years. These
programmes cater for four different proficiency
levels of Chinese, starting from the elementary
level, leading to intermediate and advanced
levels.
Major courses for long-term Chinese learners
include Basic Chinese, Oral Chinese, Chinese
Listening, Chinese Reading, Composition,
HSK Test Preparations, Chinese Culture, Chinese
Music, Taiji Boxing and Listening & Speaking,
etc.
Students who have completed the required
courses of study and obtain at least a "Pass"
in all examinations will be awarded a certificate.
Students who have completed the required
courses and gain at least a "Pass"
in the examinations will be given credits,
which enable the award of the diploma after
two years’ study.
Specialized courses and Degree programmes
Students of the long-term programmes can
also choose to attend undergraduate classes
in any field of study after completing the
Chinese courses. Those students who get a
HSK certificate of 6 level can apply for
a bachelor, master or doctoral degree programme
at Yanshan University.

Four student dinning halls can provide all
kinds of local cuisine, all flavors of foreign
countries and café. The approximate fee
for each person is about 10~20 yuan a day.
Yanshan University lies in the west part
of Hebei Avenue. With bus34, bus32, bus 6
can reach the downtown of Qinhuangdao City.
There students can enjoy their shopping and
entertainment.
Entry Qualifications
Ⅰ Application:
Applicants must be over 16 years old, in
good health and have graduated from secondary high school.
Ⅱ Procedures of Application and Enrollment:
1. Students who are interested in a programme
can contact the School of International Education
in advance and offer these materials:(a)Application
form with photo.(b)resume (c)certificate
(d) form of health check for foreigners (e)
copy of passport(the page with photo) (f)
RMB 400 for admission fee
2. Applicants for March term of next year
should offer these materials before December
15; Applicants for September term should
offer these materials before June 15.
3. Upon receiving these materials, the School
of International Education will process the
application. Successful applicants will then
be sent an Acceptance Letter and Visa Application
Form (Form JW202).
4. With these two documents, the applicants
can then apply for a Chinese visa in a Chinese
Embassy (or Consulate) .
5. Successful applicants are required to
register for the chosen programme before
the registration deadline set by the Acceptance
Letter, failing which the applicants will
be deemed to have withdrawn their application.
